Raitis Grigalis

Der in Basel lebende Komponist, Sänger und Dirigent Raitis Grigalis wurde in Riga geboren, wo er in der reich geprägten musikalischen Tradition und Chorkultur Lettlands aufwuchs. Erste Schritte seiner musikalischen Ausbildung erhielt er in der Chorschule des Rigaer Doms. Anschliessend studierte er an der Musikakademie seiner Heimatsstadt und erhielt dort 1999 sein Diplom in Chordirigieren und Komposition/Bakkalaureus der Kunst. Parallel zum Studium folgten erste Engagements, unter anderem beim Rundfunkchor Riga. 

Später ging er nach Basel, wo er bis 2004 das Hauptfach Gesang an der Schola Cantorum Basiliensis bei Richard Levit und Andreas Scholl belegte. Im Nebenfach studierte Raitis Grigalis Komposition bei Roland Moser. Es folgten Jahre am Conservatoire de Musique in Neuenburg, und zwar in Gesang bei Jeanne Roth, Weitere Studien in Orchester-Dirigieren folgten 2010 bei Ralph Weikert an der Musikhochschule Luzern. Neben seiner solistischen Tätigkeit tritt Grigalis auch als Mitglied verschiedener Ensembles in Konzerten in ganz Europa auf. Zahlreiche CD- Einspielungen dokumentieren sein künstlerisches Schaffen. Sein Repertoire als Bariton umfasst Werke des Mittelalters bis hin zur Romantik.

The Basel-based composer, singer and conductor Raitis Grigalis was born in Riga, where he grew up immersed in Latvia's rich musical tradition and choral culture. He took his initial steps in musical training at the choir school of Riga Cathedral. He then studied at the music academy in his hometown, graduating in 1999 with a bachelor of arts degree in choral conducting and composition. While still a student, he first began performing with various ensembles including the Riga Radio Choir.

He later moved to Basel where he studied voice with Richard Levit and Andreas Scholl at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis until 2004. In addition to studying vocal performance, Raitis also studied composition as a minor subject with Roland Moser. This was followed by years at the Conservatoire de Musique in Neuchâtel, where he further trained his singing with Jeanne Roth. Additional studies in orchestral conducting followed in 2010 with Ralph Weikert at the Lucerne School of Music. In addition to his solo activities, he also performs in concerts throughout Europe as a member of various ensembles. Numerous CD recordings document his artistic work. His repertoire as a baritone ranges from medieval to Romantic works.  Raitis has been a co-Director of the English Seminar Choir since 2018.
